This is what happens to this thief: he tells the policeman that there is no theft, that the woman he supposedly stole from was so nice to give him her watch. But he also knows that this cannot go on much longer, so he tries to save himself by making his intentions sound perfectly normal and comprehensible. Who wouldn’t make us a gift when we have shown them a gun? Nobody, right?
What’s there to know now is whether the policeman relieves him or not. That is why the joke is also funny... because we all imagine different reactions for the policeman.

Explicación
Seamos honestos: todos hemos hecho alguna trastada y, al ser descubiertos por nuestros padres, hemos puesto una excusa tonta, la primera que se nos venía a la cabeza. Eso es lo que le pasa a este ladrón. Le cuenta al policía que no hay robo, que la mujer a la que supuestamente ha robado ha sido tan simpática que le ha dado el reloj. Pero también sabe que no puede seguir con esa excusa mucho tiempo, así que intenta salvarse haciendo que sus intenciones sean de los más comprensibles. ¿Quién se negaría a hacernos un regalo cuando hemos enseñado una pistola? Nadie, ¿verdad?
Ahora lo que nos queda por saber es si el policía se lo cree o no. Por esto también nos hace gracia el chiste... porque cada uno se imagina una reacción distinta del policía.
