Explanation
We have all feared sometimes that we get asked one of those unanswerable questions at school, no matter how much we have studied. In this case, Peter has thought that he has come across with one of those. The teacher asks him what name do the people born in England receive. Any of us would have quickly answered “English”, but Peter must be a little distracted today, for he believes that the teacher is asking him for the name of each and every one of the inhabitants of England… And that’s more than 50 million people! Can you imagine the poor student memorizing the whole telephone guide?
That could never happen, and that is why the joke is so funny for us: hopefully, we know that Peter was wrong! If the teacher had really asked for the names of all English people, passing a course could turn into a nightmare.

A lo que Pedrito, asustado, responde:

Explicación:
Todos hemos temido alguna vez que nos hagan en el colegio una de esas preguntas que, por mucho que hayamos estudiado, no seamos capaces de responder. En este caso Pedrito ha creído encontrarse con ella. La profesora le pregunta cómo se llaman los que han nacido en Inglaterra. Cualquiera de nosotros rápidamente hubiese respondido “ingleses”, pero Pedrito debe andar un poco despistado pues cree que la profesora le está preguntando el nombre de todos y cada uno de los habitantes de Inglaterra… ¡Y son más de 50 cincuenta millones de personas! ¿Os imagináis al pobre alumno estudiando la guía telefónica de Inglaterra?
Eso nunca podría pasar, y por eso nos hace tanta gracia: ¡menos mal que sabemos que Pedrito se ha equivocado! Porque como resultase que la profe ha pedido el nombre de cada inglés pasar de curso sería una pesadilla.
